Newcomers are welcome at Rinzai-ji Zen Center. For your first visit, please Register Here for an Introductory orientation held many Saturday mornings. For those who cannot come on Saturday, we will try to arrange a different time for you to receive a basic instruction.
Zendo is open six days a week. Morning Zazen is held Tuesday through Sunday and Evening Zendo is held Tuesday through Saturday, variously timed to suit different lifestyle. Daily zazen includes Choka (morning chanting), Zazen (sitting meditation) and Kinhin (walking practice).
A Zazenkai at Rinzai-ji is a monthly, one-day retreat from 9am to 4 pm. It includes a formal, silent lunch and a Dharma talk. A Zazenkai is a special time for intensive meditation practice in a formal setting. Beginners are welcome but should arrange for instructions.
Immerse yourself in the life of zen tradition and our community by joining the residency program. Gentai-an is located near Rinzai-ji and currently has private rooms as well as dormitory space available for those who are seeking for more intense zen practice as a part of your daily life. Guests students are welcome! Join us for a few days or weeks to experience fully. Students of our teacher, Joshu Sasaki Roshi, may also arrange for long-term residency either on a full-time participation/workstudy basis or on a part-time participation/rent-paying basis. Full-time students are expected to engage in our entire schedule, including all work periods, meals and retreats. Part-time students have more flexibility in these areas but are still expected to join actively in multiple aspects of our community life. Email us or call (323) 732-2263 to learn more.
