The theme is: “Intensifying our Practice: For Advanced and Beginning Students.” It will be led by Masaki Matsubara Osho, Ph.D, Abbot of Butsumoji Temple in Chiba, Japan. Dr. Masaki Matsubara is an eighteenth generation Zen priest in the Rinzai tradition. Following his Zen monastic training Japan at Heirinji Monastery, Matsubara Osho earned a Ph.D. in Asian Religions from Cornell University with a doctoral dissertation on Zen Master Hakuin. He taught Buddhist Studies, East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Religious Studies at UC Berkeley, and was a fellow at the Ho Center for Buddhist Studies at Stanford University. Currently, he is a Visiting Scholar at Cornell’s East Asia Program and a Mentor in the Contemplative Studies Initiative at Brown. He travels between the United States and Japan to lead seminars and retreats, and has taught twice in the Sangha Seminars at Mt. Baldy.
